To start, see to it that the person is comfortable while he lies down. They have to be laying down on a surface that is both firm and soft. Start out with the simple rub. Slowly, and using the whole flat side of both of your hands, rub up from the lower back area and toward the neck. This rub should have at least a little bit of pressure in it but don’t apply your full massage pressure yet. Start at the base of the back and then move your hands up, along both sides of the spinal column toward the neck then move across the shoulders and work your way back down the back. As you continue doing this, make your loops smaller and smaller so that you are able to cover the entire back.

You can give good and direct pressure when you try using the heels of your hands. Using the heels of your palms to put on pressure, start working in little circles at the base of the back on either side of the spine and then work those little circles out toward the person’s sides, up a little bit and then back across to the spinal column and upward until you have massaged the whole back.

Sit on one side of the person who is on the receiving end of your massage. Next, having one hand on top of the other, drive into the back using your fingers. start out with the spinal column and push steadily away from the spine, across your back and then very lightly rub your hands back toward the backbone. Repeat as you massage up the back and then repeat on the person’s other side.

Work the spinal column. Begin at the base of the spinal column and work up each of the sausage-y muscles on each side of the backbone with your fingers or your thumbs. Rub each node at least five times each so that you can work up a little friction. Rub all the way up one side of the back and then massage the other side.

One of the things to bear in mind as you work through each of these techniques is that it is best to re-relax your person between each portion of the massage you’re giving. This means that after you’ve used one technique, do the basic rub that you used at the beginning of the massage for several minutes.
